Australia Smashes EV Sales Record
The figures, published by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), revealed that electrified vehicles as a whole — including hybrids and plug-in hybrids — accounted for 46 percent of all new sales in May, signaling a seismic shift in Australian consumer preferences.
FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber highlighted the SUV segment as the most dramatic battleground, where EV sales surged 167 percent year-on-year in May, plug-in hybrid sales rocketed 377 percent, and petrol SUV sales collapsed by 31 percent.
Chinese manufacturers are emerging as the primary beneficiaries of the boom. Leading Chinese automaker BYD moved 8,211 vehicles in Australia in May alone — a staggering 155 percent jump from May 2025. Combined sales for BYD and fellow Chinese brands GWM and Chery reached 78,168 units through the end of May 2026, up sharply from 46,023 at the same point last year.
Toyota retained its position as Australia's top-selling manufacturer in May, though the Japanese giant is not immune to the shifting landscape — its sales for the first five months of 2026 dropped to 76,017 vehicles, down from 100,753 over the same period in 2025.
